One Faith,
Infinite Expressions
Islam began in 7th-century Arabia and spread through trade, scholarship, love, and migration across the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Each region it touched added its own color, flavor, and language to the conversation.
What makes the Muslim world remarkable isn't just how far Islam reached, but how beautifully it wove itself into local traditions everywhere it went. The sound of the adhan in Istanbul is not the same as in Zanzibar or in Jakarta and that's not a bug, that's the beauty.
From the Atlantic to the Pacific
The Muslim world isn't one place - it's a constellation of cultures spanning three continents and dozens of countries. From the clay architecture of Mali to the wooden mosques of Indonesia, from the mountain villages of Afghanistan to the coastal cities of Morocco, Muslim communities have flourished in deserts, rainforests, steppes, and islands.
This means 1.9 billion people, speaking hundreds of languages, cooking thousands of dishes, and celebrating in ways as varied as the landscapes they call home.
A Journey Through Muslim Cultures
North Africa & the Maghreb: Berber traditions mixed with Arab influences. Think: intricate zellige tilework, gnaoua music rhythms, mint tea ceremonies, and souks overflowing with spices and leather goods. Countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania
The Middle East: The heartland where it all began. Ancient cities, epic poetry, dabke dancing, mezze spreads, and coffee ceremonies. From Levantine villages to Gulf metropolises. Countries: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine
Turkey & the Balkan: Ottoman heritage meets European influences. Whirling dervishes, tulip gardens, hammams, baklava, and centuries of architectural grandeur. Countries: Turkey, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo
West Africa: Islam arrived through trade routes across the Sahara. Vibrant textiles, talking drums, jollof rice debates, and mud-brick mosques that look like sculptures. Countries: Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, Gambia
East Africa: Swahili coast culture - where Arabic, Bantu, and Indian Ocean influences converge. Taarab music, intricate henna, spice-scented streets. Countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Comoros
The Caucasus & Central Asia: Silk Road traditions, nomadic heritage, felt-making, plov (pilaf), and epic oral poetry. Mountain cultures and steppe celebrations. Countries: Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan
South Asia: Mughal grandeur meets local diversity. Qawwali music, biryani variations, truck art, mehndi designs, and Sufi shrines covered in rose petals. Countries: Pakistan, Bangladesh, parts of India, Maldives
Southeast Asia: The world's largest Muslim populations with distinctly local flavors. Batik textiles, gamelan music, shadow puppets, satay, and mosques with pagoda-style roofs. Countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Philippines
The Diaspora: Muslim communities thriving everywhere from New York to London to São Paulo, Toronto to Sydney to the DMV, bringing their traditions into new contexts and creating fusion cultures all their own.
